Sir Penwood

British Royal Navy Vice-Admiral Sir Shelby M. Penwood (英国海軍中将 シェルビー・M・ペンウッド卿, Igirisu kaigun chūjō Sherubī M. Pen'uddo-Kyō?) is a major supporting character in the Hellsing series created by Kohta Hirano. He is voiced by Masashi Hirose in the Japanese sub and Stuart MacLean in the English dub.

He was a Vice-Admiral of the Royal Navy, as well as a good acquaintance of Integra Hellsing and a close friend of her late father, Arthur Hellsing.

Appearance[]

Penwood is an older man with a short and plump appearance. Being the youngest of the trio which consists of him, Arthur Hellsing, and Sir Hugh Irons, Penwood's facial hair color hadn't turn grey and remains the same as it is. He has a hair short hair slicking to the back, with its bangs being swept over to the left and a bushy mustache. He has blue pupils. While brown in the OVA, illustrations of him by Hirano shows him having a blonde hair instead. Penwood wears a white buttoned shirt with red, sometimes dark blue tie under dark blue double-breasted suit jacket with matching trousers and black business shoes.

Personality[]

In flashback sequences at the end of Ultimate V, Penwood is seen as the butt of the joke by Sir Hugh Irons and Sir Arthur Hellsing because of his clumsy and incapable nature.[2] He was often thought to be incapable of his job and a coward for his frequent fits of panic, such as when he accepts his apparent death after the Valentine Brothers' ghoul soldiers successfully infiltrate the Hellsing Organisation compound. His hasty and loud nature led to Sir Irons briefly shutting him up.[3]

But during Millennium's invasion of London, his behavior somehow changed.[4] Instead of evacuating himself, he held his ground at England's military headquarters along with all the remaining survivors of the double-agents' attack.[5][6] As he worked to set up his last stand, he uses a radio to command the remainder of London's law enforcement groups and surviving soldiers to stand their ground. By the time Millennium forces had successfully infiltrated the base, Penwood had successfully wired the operations room with an enormous amount of plastic explosives. When the vampire soldiers approached him, Penwood demonstrated his loyalty to the British Crown by setting off the explosives and taking a number of Millennium agents and soldiers with him.[7]

Nevertheless, while thought to be a fool, thick, and incompetent, Penwood is a honor and prideful man; described by Irons as a "man among men." Though the younger members of the Conference suspected Penwood to be the traitor within the Round Table, Penwood is a man who would rather commit suicide than turn traitor.[8]

History[]

He first made use of his position by providing Arthur Hellsing with helicopters and weaponry, and would go on to do the same for Integra; in fact, in his first meeting with her as a girl, soon after Arthur's death he remembered her stating she would not change Arthur's policies of armament requisition (and hinted she even might extend them).[9]

Hellsing[]

During the invasion of London, it is revealed that a member of the inner circle has betrayed them to Millennium and become a vampire. Integra apologized to Penwood after a failed vampire coup, stating that she assumed he was the one to betray them. He retorts by saying that he is many things (even acknowledging he has never had to actually do anything to earn his stay in the Table, since his position was granted to him by birth alone) but was not a coward. As Millennium's forces advanced on the city, Integra planned to escape, and gave Sir Penwood a specialized gun upon his decision to stay and fight, telling him not to die. After she left, he told his staff to escape while they could and leave him behind. They refused and commenced work, commending his act of valor and gallantry.

After the full force of Nazi vampires were set upon the city, Penwood's entire staff was killed, leaving him alone. In his last act of bravery, he successfully lured a battalion of vampires into his command center and detonated a series of C4 bombs, taking the vampires out, annihilating the compound and ending his life. His last transmission ordered the remaining military and police forces still alive in London to fight and never surrender to the vampire horde.

Legacy[]

Thirty years into the future, when his grandson asked Integra about him, she declared him a hero and recounted his exploits (though she embellished the real history quite noticeably, prompting him to ask her to tell the truth). Though, to the end, she kept insisting that was the truth.

Relationships[]

Allies[]

  • Sir Arthur Hellsing: According to Integra Hellsing's flashbacks, Arthur and Shelby Penwood had much the same relationship his daughter and the man would come to have. In particular, both had the tendency to ask for expensive and ridiculous items such as new guns or helicopters. Aside from that, the two were good friends.[10]
  • Sir Hugh Irons: Though interactions between them are very short on-screen, Irons and Penwood were great friends off-screen. When the members of the Round Table accused Penwood of treachery, Irons opposed the idea and stated that Penwood would rather commit suicide than turn traitor. After the war, Irons visited Penwood and Arthur's graves to reminisce for the final time before parting away.[11]
  • Sir Integral Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing: After Arthur's death, Integra was introduced to Penwood via Walter. Arthur instructed Integra that if she was in need of a favor, ask Sir Penwood. Penwood's cowardly and clumsy nature got the better of him during their first meeting of each other that Penwood shivers, shakes, and sweats profusely.[12] Over the years, Integra had grown much more mature now than she is years ago. At the meeting during the Valentine Brothers' raid, Penwood was highly critical of Integra's handling of the situation that Irons had to step in and defend Integra from his loudmouth.[13]

Even so, Penwood isn't afraid to ask Integra for favors in which she gladly accepts even if the request was objected by many of Penwood's men.[14] When the invasion of London had started, Integra tells Penwood to escape immediately as he has responsibilities that only he can fulfill, however Penwood refuses to do so even after Integra tries a second time to tell him to escape. Penwood needed to prove himself that he's more than a useless incompetent coward, so this is his chance to do something brave, which caused Integra to feel nothing but respect for him despite how he treated her during the Valentine Brothers' raid.[15]

Thirty years after the battle had ended, Integra speaks highly of Penwood. Even blaming that the reason that the damaged eye she has is because of Penwood's superb fencing skills.[16]

Abilities[]

Being the Vice-Admiral of the Royal British Navy, Penwood is in charge of the United Kingdom's naval force that protects the high seas.[17][18] Being a high-ranking member of the Round Table Council, Penwood is taught how to fence and is presumably a skilled one.[19]

Weapons[]

Integra's Sig-Sauer P226

Other Weapons[]

  • M1911: When Jan Valentine bursts into the Conference room, the members of the Council had prepared for this, so they had stragetically positioned their chairs and pistols aimed towards the door in order to welcome the enemy had they finally reached the room. In case of Penwood, he used what appears to be a M1911 pistol to shoot Jan Valentine.[20]
  • Double-Barreled Shotgun: During the credits of Ultimate V, a younger Penwood are seen with a Double-Barreled Shotgun. Arthur Hellsing is also beside him on a horse, wielding the same weapon. They appear to be hunting.[21]
