Sir Integra
History

Sir Integral Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing (インテグラル・ファルブルケ・ウィンゲーツ・ヘルシング卿, Integuraru Faruburuke Wingētsu Herushingu-Kyō?, Shortened to: Integra Hellsing) is one of the three main protagonists of the Hellsing series created by Kohta Hirano, alongside Alucard and Seras Victoria. In both adaptations of Hellsing, she is voiced by Yoshiko Sakakibara in the Japanese sub and Victoria Harwood in the English dub.

A 22-year-old noblewoman member of the Protestant Knights who is the head and last member of the Hellsing family; descendant of Professor Helsing, the Bureau Director of the Hellsing Organisation, and the current master of Hellsing's vampire, Alucard. She runs the Hellsing Organisation with charisma and patriotism, and she is one of the few people who can stand up to the force of Alucard's personality and command his respect.

Appearance[]

Integra has creamy brown skin, blue eyes and long blonde hair (her hair is slightly curly in the manga and has bangs also). She has a tall, thin build, almost to the point of being lanky. Thirty years later, after Millennium's Operation Sea Lion 2, her left eye is injured to the point where she adopts a black eyepatch to cover it, which she wears under her glasses and her hair has turned white, her age now being fifty-two years old.

Integra's attire consists of a dark green blazer and dark green dress pants, a white buttoned shirt, black shoes and a red cravat. She also wears a pair of circular wire-rimmed glasses, and is often seen sporting a dark green trench coat when venturing outside her Manor. She also appears to keep a large revolver in a hidden holster beneath her blazer, supplementing it with a more overt Sig-Sauer pistol and a saber when combat seems likely. She has a fondness for smoking cigars, even in a combat situation. In the first colored picture of Integra featured on the back cover of the first volume of the manga, her cravat is neither blue nor red, but gold. Integra also appears in several Young King Ours covers and on the cover of Volumes 3 and 6, along with Alucard. Here, her ascot is red.

Personality[]

A calm and collected individual, Integra handles most situations that would induce terror and fear in the average person with a controlled ease. In most cases, even genuine surprise and happiness, her reactions to stimuli are subdued.[14] Her conduct is very business-like, however she isn't incapable of a bit of humor, good-natured or not.[15][16] Despite appearing detached and cold, she cares deeply for the lives of her men, vowing revenge for them after their slaughter by the Valentine Brothers.[17]

Integra as a child was more timid than she was back in 1999, yet a very willful girl, being brought up with a commanding presence that even Alucard respects. When Alucard became her servant, she grew more confident and comfortable with her position as head of the Hellsing family and a Knight of the Round Table. Much like Seras Victoria, Integra experiences a coming of age, gaining experience and losing her remaining innocence as events unfold and the war begins, transforming into a leader with an iron resolution who does not flinch at the first signs of danger and who gains wisdom through dire losses and betrayals.[18] The Major recognizes her change from a "beautiful Fräulein" to the most dangerous enemy who stands in the way of his plans, calling her forth into his Zeppelin.[19][20]

Integra is fearless, has been since she was a child, and has carried this trait with her into adulthood. Though not as overt as Alucard, there is an intimidating and domineering air about her; even as a young girl she could make Sir Shelby M. Penwood bend to her will when he shows hesitance.[21] This fearlessness does not stop at humans either, as she challenges an entire squad of Nazi Vampires after decapitating one of their number.[22] Shortly after, Alexander Anderson looms over her, but she does not even show the slightest bit of fear to him, a man arguably as strong as her servant Alucard and with no reason not to kill her.[23] As evidenced by one call between her and Alucard, Integra appears to be rather easily flustered.[24]

Integra is very patriotic and incredibly loyal to the crown. She is responsible, usually reasonable, however her calm demeanor can give way to bouts of rage at times. One notable example is when Alucard questions her orders, which she responds to by telling him fervently and angrily that they are what they are and that she is not to be questioned.[25] Integra, though serious and stoic, isn't hard-hearted or unfeeling. When Alucard slaughters innocent humans cooperating with Tubalcain Alhambra, she asks with a noticeable amount of horror what her servant did to those men.[26] At times, she seems to forget who and what he is. There is genuine pain present when she gives the order for Alucard to kill a traitorous, vampirized Walter, a man she'd practically grown up with.[27] Later, Alucard himself begins to fade after ingesting Schrödinger, and she was visibly upset; desperately begging for Alucard to not close his eyes.[28][29]

Three decades later, her personality seems to have relaxed some, but she can still be serious when the time calls for it and age hasn't diminished her commanding presence. Her temper is also a bit quicker.[30]

Relationships[]

Familial[]

  • Arthur Hellsing: Arthur entrusts Integra with the protection of England and the Protestant church. When Integra finds Alucard in the dungeons, she mentions how she "imagined that there might [have been]... a knight who'd protect [her] from the bad guys." Considering that Arthur Hellsing was a knight of England, it could be implied that Integra was longing for someone like her father protecting her from harm.[31]In Volume 9, Integra remembers conversations with her father on his deathbed. She immediately remembers his comment on how vampires "look like terribly pitiful children who might simply break down and cry feebly," when Alucard is forced to kill Anderson.[32] From his teachings, although was tragically cut short, Integra learned a lot. Though Arthur had wished that he had lived longer in order to teach Integra more, in which he had many.[33]

Allies[]

  • Alucard: Integra has been connected to Alucard since her father's death. Arthur Hellsing named her the new head of the Hellsing Organization, a decision that drove his jealous brother, Richard, to try and kill her. Using the air ducts, Integra snuck into the dungeons of the Hellsing Manor's sublevels and found Alucard's corpse in one of the rooms. After being awakened by Richard's men who shot Integra in the arm, Alucard brutally murders Richard and his men before pledging loyalty towards Integra.[34] At times she has trouble understanding his true nature. Walter had to remind her that he is a genuine article when it comes to monsters.[35] When witnessing Alucard's battle with Anderson, she finally realized what her father meant when he compared vampires to children crying out for death.[36]

Upon Alucard's disappearance from existence, Integra was visibly devastated.[37][38] However remains confident that he will return.[39] Over the thirty years it takes for Alucard to re-manifest himself, Integra's faith in his return is quite shaken. When Alucard finally does reappear in the final chapter, she tells him sorrowfully that she is an old woman now, but Alucard seems not to care in the least. Similar to her previous engagement with Seras, Integra bites her finger hard enough to draw blood. While Alucard is still seated before her, she allows her blood to fall into his mouth.[40]
  • Seras Victoria: Integra is first outraged at Alucard's actions in turning Seras into a vampire, then eventually comes to accept her within the Hellsing Organisation.[41][42] In Volume 2, Seras loses control of her vampire instincts during the attack on Hellsing Manor. In her rage, she kills the newly reanimated Hellsing soldiers in front of Integra. Integra, horrified at the sight of Seras mercilessly slaughtering her men, rushes to Seras and embraces her, pleading for her to stop rather than demanding it of her.[43] Despite being a vampire, Integra trusts Seras's self control, judgment, and with Integra's own life and mortality.

In Volume 4, Integra ordered Seras to lick the blood off of Integra's own finger that she had cut. While at first, Seras hesitates; she eventually gives into it and feels better afterwards.[44] This scene demonstrated that Integra trusted that Seras would not bite her even when offered pure virgin blood. Seras stays with Integra during the thirty year transitional period in the manga, where the two have grown even closer as companions.
  • Sir Shelby M. Penwood: Not long after, Integra was knighted and introduced to Vice Admiral Sir Penwood, a former friend of her father. Stating that she herself is no different from her father, Integra asked Penwood to take care of her.[45] His sacrifice was just one of the many examples that helped solidify Integra's resolution about humanity's worth and continue her duty. Integra has deep respect for Sir Penwood for his Heroic last stand; though she exaggerated it for his grandson, so he could looked upon more favorably.[46]

Enemies[]

  • Alexander Anderson: When Anderson ambushed Alucard and Seras on their mission in Badrick, Integra had a dislike towards Anderson for his psychopathic nature and his actions; calling him a "monster" for being a Human Regenerator. In the face of a man who's almost as strong as Alucard, Integra shows no fear and remains calm, still smirking as she struggles to keep her guard up from Anderson's bayonets.[47] Later in Volume 6, Integra once again faces Anderson completely alone. She stares begrudgingly at Anderson as he berates yet, respecting her actions for not giving up while being swarmed by members of the Last Battalion.[48] After witnessing Alucard's battle with Anderson, Integra found her new respect towards Anderson and carefully placed his bayonets on the floor as she witnesses Alucard peacefully talking to his true sworn enemy.[49]
  • Walter C. Dornez: Walter C. Dornez was the Hellsing family's butler. He had always been a dear friend and trustworthy figure for her, acted as an advisor, protector, and occasionally emotional support. While Alucard may have been Hellsing's crown glory, Walter could very well be considered her second best soldier before Seras Victoria agrees to drink blood. Integra and Walter shared an interesting dynamic where they discussed about various combat methods and other plans of action.[50][51] Integra also relied on Walter to retrieve information, from files on Alexander Anderson to finding out the true meaning of Millennium from Jan Valentine's cryptic final message.[52][53] Integra clearly trusted Walter with her life, as he is often used as her bodyguard rather than Alucard or Seras.[54]

When it is discovered that Walter had betrayed them, Integra was devastated.[55][56] After an inner struggle, she ordered Alucard to kill him, because any forces which opposes Hellsing is to be crushed underfoot. When she had finished sending in the order to Alucard to eleminate Walter, she struggled to hold back her tears within the last few sentences.[57] Despite his betrayal, Integra is moved to sadness when Walter passes away.[58] When she notices how much she has aged over the past thirty years, her older appearance reminded her of Walter.[59]

Family[]

Integra's known family includes Abraham Van Helsing, a Dutch metaphysican and philosopher and one of the main characters of Bram Stoker's Dracula, who was either her ancestor. Her biological mother was a Indian-origin women and her father was Sir Arthur Hellsing, who died when she was 12 years old, in 1989.[60] Her skin color is a creamy brown, darker than that of many other characters, to which Hirano mentions in that her skin tone being that of an "Indian."[61] Due to her being a descent of Abraham Van Helsing, she uses phrases such as "Jah," often in the manga.[62][63]

Even though Integra had a far from normal childhood and did not go to school or a daycare, it was obvious that Arthur loved Integra very much, and wanted the best for her. It was from him that she inherited her current position as Bureau Director of the Hellsing Organisation and her seat in theRound Table Council. Her uncle, Richard, sought to kill her and take the headship of the Hellsing family for himself. This was prevented by Alucard, when he blocked the bullet that was fired at Integra's face. Richard's exact motivations are unknown, though it is possible that he coveted the power and prestige of a seat in the Round Table Council. Integra herself fired the bullet that killed Richard.[64]

Intelligence: Very intelligent, Integra was able to determine the route Huger and Jessica would take and who their next targets would be by following their patterns, and she devised a strategy accordingly.[65][66] She was also the first to guess what Jan's mysterious clue, "Millennium," was actually referring to.[67]

IndomitableWillOVA

Surrounded by members of the Last Battalion, Integra refuses to give up and instead tries to fight back until Anderson saves her

IndomitableWillManga

Indomitable Will: In spite of her talents, she is still fairly young and inexperienced as a leader, and thus unable to grasp or deal with the full extent of the Major's plans. However, she makes up for that in her stern and unbendable will, not backing down no matter how hopeless the situation is. This was clearly shown when she was surrounded by dozens of Last Battalion members, yet still stood her ground and tries to fight back with her saber until the interference of Anderson who later wiped the Last Battalion with the Armed Priest Vanguard.[68][69]

MenacingPresenceOVA

MenacingPresenceManga

Through sheer intimidation, Integra was able to make Sir Penwood nervous as a young girl

Menacing Presence: Integra seems to have a very strong presence and charisma; being able to intimidate and scare Heinkel Wulf by ignoring her intimidation with a gun and convinces her, despite strong protest to light her cigar, the other Iscariot priests seem very scared by Integra's intimidation and will.[70] By intimidation alone, she was able to scare Sir Penwood, even as a teen.[71]

FencingOVA

FencingManga

As an old woman, Integra was able to win a Fencing match against Sir Penwood's grandson

Superb Fencer: Integra is an exceptionally excellent fencer with fast reflexes and speed and is even able to block an attack from Alexander Anderson.[72] Later, she met a head on attack by a vampirized Nazi soldier, beheading him as he leaped at her after a car crash that shook her.[73] Even with old age, she was able to keep up with the new generation of the Round Table members in fencing, even shown winning against Sir Penwood's grandson.[74]

MarksmanshipOVA

MarksmanshipManga

With her aim and accuracy, Integra was able to accurately shatter off Anderson's bayonets with her pistol

Marksmanship: Her aim with a pistol is almost superhumanly accurate. She demonstrates similar abilities in the manga during Volume 6, where she shot down one of the vampirized Nazi soldier of the Last Battalion.[75] Perhaps the best example of her shooting skills is in Volume 1 where she emptied a modified Sig-Sauer onto Alexander Anderson's bayonets, shattering them just as he was about to kill Seras Victoria despite the fact that the bayonets were moving.[76]
Control Over Alucard
After Alucard pledging loyalty towards Integra, Integra gained absolute control over Alucard; allowing her to order him to do her bidding.[77] In order to fully release the capabilities of controlling his shadows and familiars, Alucard has to request Integra to unlock Level Zero- a level in which unlocks all restrains over Alucard's true capabilities.[78]

Concept and Creation[]

Integra and Seras sdfdsf

The title of the Hellsing series itself is derived from the fact that Integra, one of the main characters of the series, is a descendant of Professor Van Helsing.[79] When creating Integra, it was Hirano's intention to make her the most "human-like" character in the series. Hirano described her as an "anti-hero" who'd take no chance, and no mercy in battle in order to get what they want.[80] Given that the main focal point of the story is that the human will always defeat the monster, it is why Integra defeated The Major, and also why The Major temporarily defeated Alucard.[81] In Issue #30 of Young King OURs, Integra was described as having a skin tone similar to that of an Indian.[82]

Name[]

The manga and the OVA use Integra's full name. Although the OVA version as well as the anime uses the first name Integra, the English adaption of the manga refers to Integra's full first name as Integral due to the extra -ru in the Japanese spelling.[83] The main characters in particular call her Sir Integra (Alucard usually preferring to address her as "Master"), Integra being a nickname. Hellsing, as the bonus booklet included in the Japanese edition of the first Hellsing anime DVD reveals, is an acronym for "Her Royal English Legions of Legitimate Supernatural and Immortal Night Guard," as well as one of the protagonist of the 1897 novel Dracula, Abraham Van Helsing.[84][85] Wingates is an uncommon English name.

As a member of the Royal Protestant Knights, she is designated with the title, "Sir," which has caused some confusion with fans, about Integra's gender. Whether the title is inherited from her father, in which case she is a Baronetess , remains a matter of speculation. The correct appellation for knighted females within the British honours system is, in fact, "Dame," not "Sir."[86] Whether Integra's title is correct within the fictional Protestant Knights of the Hellsing Universe or is simply a misnomer is not known.

Trivia[]

  • Integra normally smokes a fictional brand of small cigars (either cigarillos or possibly panatelas) called "Hendi Winzermans small cigars." The name and the packaging design indicate that they are a play on the real cigar brand Henri Wintermans. In fact, the similarity of the spelling may even indicate that it was simply a spelling mistake.
  • Integra's prototype was featured Kouta's old manga Hi and Low along with Yumiko Takagi.
  • There is artwork of Integra and Alucard where his arm is around her shoulders and his hand is down to her side. The fingers are positioned awkwardly, leading some to believe that Alucard was groping Integra's breast. However, the position and anatomy of her body suggests that he isn't groping anything and his hand is positioned over her ribs, not her chest.
