Hellsing: Ultimate (Known as "Hellsing OVA" in Japan) is an Original Video Animation series based on a manga series by the same name created by Kohta Hirano.

The first 50-minute installment was released to Region 2 DVD in Japan on February 10, 2006, and as of December 26, 2012, all ten episodes have been released. The series ran in North America from 2006, to 2014. The OVA was directed by Tomokazu Tokoro, Kenichi Suzuki, Yasuhiro Matsumura, with a screenplay written by Hideyuki Kurata and Yosuke Kuroda, character designs provided by Ryoji Nakamori and music composed by Hayato Matsuo with a production by studio Satelight, then Madhouse, and then Graphinica × Kelmadick.

The series was created with the intentions of following the manga faithfully. Following the announcement that Funimation would be unified under the Crunchyroll brand, both Hellsing and Hellsing: Ultimate were moved to the platform in 2022.

The Hellsing Organisation, a secret branch of the British government, has long been battling supernatural threats to keep the people safe from creatures of the night. Its current leader, Sir Integra Hellsing, controls her own personal army to eliminate the undead beings, but even her highly trained soldiers pale in comparison to her most trusted vampire exterminator, Alucard, who is actually a powerful vampire himself. Along with Integra's mysterious butler and Alucard's new vampire minion, Seras Victoria, the Hellsing Organisation must face not only regular ghouls and vampires, but a rivaling secret branch of the Vatican and a mysterious group of madmen spawned by a certain war over 55 years ago.

Main Characters

• Alucard: Alucard is a mysterious figure. A supernatural vampire of untold age and power, he acts as the Hellsing Organisation's secret weapon. His reasons for doing so, however, as well as his motivations, remains unknown. His position within the Hellsing Organisation is one of unique status. He is the agency's ace in the hole, answerable only to the Organisation's Chairman.
• Sir Integral Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing: A young noblewoman, she is the head and last member of the Hellsing family. She doubles as the leader of the Hellsing Organisation, and Alucard's "Master." She inherited the Hellsing Organization at the age of thirteen upon the death of her father. Although she often seems strict and domineering, she is respected and admired, even among her sworn enemies.
• Seras Victoria: Seras was a member of the London Police Department until she was mortally wounded by Alucard in his destruction of a vampire masquerading as a priest. On the verge of death, she chose to allow Alucard to turn her into a vampire. Serving beneath Alucard, she now works for the Hellsing Organisation and deals with the consequences of her decision.

Synopsis: A dying Alucard envisions his past as Vlad the Impaler, then envisions himself being carried off to execution, but before being beheaded, he drinks the blood on the floor and becomes a vampire. Soundtrack

Only one soundtrack album was released titled "Black Dog," which was released on March 21, 2008. An extra CD, titled "Warsaw Recording Selection," was released alongside the limited edition of the fourth OVA on February 22, 2008. An extra CD, titled "Nazi CD," was released with the limited edition of the first Blu-ray box set on October 22, 2010. In addition, an extra CD was released along with the limited edition of the second Blu-ray box set of Hellsing: Ultimate titled "Somehow, Iscariote" in 2015.

Production

Yasuyuki Ueda, the main producer behind the OVA series wanted to go back and re-do the series entirely, scrapping the idea for a second season in a favor of an OVA that would stick very closely with the manga more than the anime ever had. He first approached Hirano with the idea of an OVA series. The American interest in the series was heavily important in the OVA as it was in the anime, with the funds coming overseas and without them, they wouldn't have had the budget to do the series. Ueda states that because the real horror of the series is about psychological terror, it's something he wanted to really put across and that blood an violence is less important to him than that. He hoped that it'd be finished within 3 years with each episodes spanning around 35 minutes long; two OVAs per manga volume. Because they now have no restrictions with TV regulations in Japan, they had a lot more freedom and budget in producing the series.

Hideyuki Kurata was invited to work on the OVA by Yosuke Kuroda who knew that he had liked Hellsing. The plan was that they would switch between each volumes, alternating between each consecutive releases. Kurata said that he wanted to write more about the male characters because he liked them so much. However with the romance between Seras and Vernedead, he left the subject to Kuroda and asked him if he could let him finish the story. In adapting characters of Hirano, Ueda stated that they were careful in how they were gonna do so and how they were gonna animate them, even if they have the money to do so. Ueda added that if the comic gags were to fit in to certain specific scenes, then they would be adapted. Ueda commented, at the time, that various series were using CG animation, which he said that was "very time-consuming," especially when incorporating it to traditional animation, but that since the project would be an OVA, they did have the "luxury" to work with it, and that he wanted to use it for the weaponry and bullets to make them look realistic.

For the music, Hayato Matsuo thought that Hellsing was a work with a radical setting, so naturally, the music would be aggressive. He was impressed with how challenging it was to compose the music for the series. The first OST to be composed was "Target Insight," but at the time, they were wondering about what direction should they go for the music, opting to instead differ from the music of the anime series. By the time the Nazis were introduced to the series, the second half of the OVA was composed to be more orchestral. "Target Insight" was used as the basis for cool, rock-like songs while "Gradus Vita" was used as the basis for the orchestral music.

The staff did a competition with several renowned character design artists to present drawings of their version of Hellsing characters. Ryoji Nakamori won this competition, as the team thought that his design stood out from the crowd with the dynamic pose that were described to be straight out of an action film.

In designing the characters, Ryoji Nakamori had troubles with the "best parts," but he put the parts together in the "greatest common denominator." He was also working for the anime of Bleach at the time of the OVA's production, so he couldn't do much. Nakamori increased the thickness of the lines because he was told to adapt his drawings to the original work, something he regret doing because he felt he gave trouble to the animators. Even though it had looked unnatural, the eyebrows and eyes were shown through the hair so that the expression of characters would be shown clearer, and also to make it look cool.

Geneon was listed as the North American and Japanese distributor for the Hellsing: Ultimate OVA release. Studio Gonzo's parent company, G.H.D. is listed as the Asian and European license holder for the upcoming OVA. However, they're not significantly involved in the production of the OVA. The production team was given the name "Wild Geese," named after an existing group of mercenaries within the Hellsing series. Each ending of the series uses a different piece of music, ranging from Orchestral songs composed by Matsuo, to music made by existing Japanese bands, or even a returning pieces of music from the original anime.

A Promotional Video was animated with the background playing a cover of Broken English by SCHAFT. The Promotional Video played in the background, with producer Yasuyuki Ueda and Kohta Hirano held a Q&A session in Anime Expo of 2005. The reception of the Promotional Video was received positively by fans of the series, who were disappointed with the route that the original anime later went due to restrictions set by Japanese TV regulations.

The website for the anime was replaced with the OVA series in 2005. Geneon USA followed through in 2006, announcing DVD releases and recent news under the Hellsing: Ultimate title. The Japanese site was later archived by NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan after merging with Geneon. The English website was transferred through the Funimation website following the deal Funimation and Geneon made to distribute "select" Geneon titles in late 2008. The series, planned to be a 3-year long project with Satelight, later went through what is known as "production hell," receiving many change in directors and even production studios.

Casting

Many of the voice actors from the anime returned to reprise their roles as each character; notably Jouji Nakata as Alucard, Fumiko Orikasa as Seras Victoria, and Yoshiko Sakakibara as Integra Hellsing. However, Nachi Nozawa was replaced by Norio Wakamoto as Alexander Anderson, Hideyuki Tanaka was also replaced by Show Hayami as Enrico Maxwell. Minor characters like Arthur Hellsing's voice actor in the anime returned for their OVA counterpart. When casting Heinkel's voice actor, the OVA ran into a problem when Hirano informed them of Heinkel being a futanari, so the previous male actor was dropped in favor of a new female one.

In addition to the Japanese voice actors reprising their role as each individual's character for the most part, the English Dub did the same; Crispin Freeman as Alucard, K.T. Gray as Seras Victoria, and Victoria Harwood as Integra Hellsing. Taliesin Jaffe stated that the OVA is not a classical vampire story, unlike the anime. Jonathan Klein described working with the English Dub cast as "let's get rid of what we know as the original series and put that back in. In some ways, I'm glad we're doing this, but in other ways, I'm wondering if it is that we're late now, or behind everyone else?" Jaffe stated the inspirations for the script and voice directing are way different from the first anime series, describing it as quite similar to Hammer films of the 40s and the 50s. He also apparently had not expected to do it again when the project was announced, and stated that "If they call me, I'm going to go and step up to the plate. If they like what I did, I'm going to come in and knock this thing out of the park."

Jonathan Klein expressed that it was very difficult to track down the same actors for the Hellsing anime, to return for Hellsing: Ultimate years later. They had also wanted Ralph Lister, the voice of Walter C. Dornez, to reprise his role as Young Walter in episodes 9 and 10, however, the Japanese Producers insisted that they get a different actor for the role too, and said that "It was still kind of sad that we couldn’t see him during the last episode, though." He also mentioned that they couldn't get Helena Taylor to reprise her role as Zorin Blitz after episode 4 of Ultimate, because at one point; she goes to England, and Jonathan stated that "It’s one thing when an actor’s just a few hours away, but when you’re in England the cost to bring someone out — especially for anime — gets pretty high." Ultimately, they couldn't get Helena Taylor to voice Zorin Blitz again for the remaining episodes of Ultimate, re-casting her with Rachel Robinson.

Production Hell

The production of the first OVA had a rocky start, with the massive constant changes in storyboards and scripts leading into constant redraws and later, delays. Due to quality concerns, the OVA was delayed numerous time starting in November 2005 from September 2005, to December 2005, later January 2006, then finally set a definitive release date in February of 2006. The team posted an apology in the website. In addition to the retakes, the development of the first episode quickly went to Production Hell due to that sole reason of further delays and retakes. In an attempt to fix the damage already been done, Ryoji Nakamori quickly came back to the studio to fix frames on a short notice, and even though they were over the schedule of release. To compensate for the numerous delays, it was announced that a 30-minute preview of the OVA titled "Hellsing: Digest for Freaks" would broadcast on Kanagawa TV at midnight on the 22th of January.

Due to the disastrous scheduling of the first episode; with a bunch of rewrites that leads to the quality being lower than expected, the production team promises to not postpone the release of the second episode any further, with a clear focus on one script and no rewrites needed. A clear release date is set for 25 August of the same year as the first episode. When animating action sequences and battles, the team described it as a "hellish" drawing setup with a lot of processing work, staking out firearms and marks on mobs and designating groups, and that the biggest problem in production is that the return of layouts to the original artists is extremely slow due to the complexity of the work. In OVA III, Nakamori and two animation directors corrected an "uncanny" amount of work, but there were also several talented people working on the original drawings before the release of the OVA.

The production of the fourth OVA went on as usual without seemingly any problems. However for the fifth OVA, the production studio changed from Satelight to Madhouse, without Hirano's knowledge. The director also switched from Tomokazu Tokoro, to Hiroyuki Tanaka. Tanaka stated that the past four volumes were a hurdle that they had to set for themselves, and went through a lot of trial and error in Volume 1, 2, and 3, culminating in Volume 4. Tanaka said that the most difficult part was the layout of London; though the staff couldn't go to the scouting location as they had expected, Tanaka and others gave them photo albums and other materials so that they would be aware of the details of the cityscape. Tanaka noted many focus throughout the background of scenes.

There wasn't that much trouble producing the next 2 OVAs under Madhouse. However for the eighth OVA, the production team once again switched from Madhouse to Graphinica with the help of Kelmadick. The director once again switched with now Yasuhiro Matsumura from Tomokazu Tokoro. The staff posted the PV for OVA VIII in late 2011, hoping that they could convey the atmosphere of an all-out battle of a mix of CG and animation. For OVA IX, the scheduling of production was described as "hellish" from the end of the year to the beginning of the year. In the final OVA, the production schedule was still as disastrous as ever; numerous cuts that haven't been processed and drawings that are being redone, with more than half of the cuts were retakes that made the November release impossible, so they had to delay it to December.

Broadcasting and Release

The first 50-minute installment was released to Region 2 DVD in Japan on February 2006, followed by OVA II's release in August of the same year. OVA III was released a year later in April of 2007, while OVA IV released in February of 2008. In the same year with the change of studios from Satelight to Madhouse, OVA V was released on November, OVA VI on July 2009,, and OVA VII in December 2009. The DVD included a teaser trailer announcing the eighth episode with a tentative release date of "Sometime in 2010." 2 years later, Graphinica and Kelmadick picked up the series and started where it had left off, finally releasing OVA VIII in July 2011. The two final episodes were released in February, and December of 2012 respectively.

In October of 2010, Madhouse released a new Blu-ray BOX set edition of OVAs I-IV. The box re-animated and redrew certain specific scenes to keep up with the consistent quality of later OVAs. Later broadcasting and streaming uses these specific editions of OVA I-IV instead of the original Satelight editions. In 2015, NBUniversal (previously Geneon) released the limited edition of the second Blu-ray box set. In November of 2018 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Hellsing series, NBCUniversal released a Limited Deluxe Steel edition of the Hellsing OVA series.

The English release of the OVA series is licensed in the United States by Geneon USA. In producing the English dub of the series, Geneon used much of the original cast from the English dub of the anime, which Geneon also licenses. The first OVA was released to Region 1 DVD on December 5, 2006, after premiering at the 2006 Anime Expo. 2 more OVAs by Geneon USA would soon follow, with OVA II releasing in June 12, 2007, and OVA III on October 16, 2007. Geneon announced that they would stop self-distribution of its titles in 2007. In 2008, Funimation announced that they would distribute specific Geneon titles, so the distribution of the Hellsing: Ultimate series was assumed by Funimation, although Geneon remains its licensor. Funimation released OVA IV on September 23, 2008, along with a re-release of the first three episodes. In 2010, Funimation announced that they had licensed OVAs V-VII. OVA VIII was licensed by Funimation the next year. OVA IX and X was released in 2014. Following the announcement that Funimation would be unified under the Crunchyroll brand, Hellsing: Ultimate was moved to the platform in 2022.

Originally, the first two OVAs of the series were broadcasted on Starz Edge's Animidnight programming block in 2008. However, despite announcing that OVA 3 and 4 was to be aired; they were not broadcasted because of the fact that the 4th episodes was not ready with an English-language track yet. They later canceled the broadcast of further episodes of the series. The series began airing on Adult Swim's Toonami block on September 13, 2014, at 3:00 AM. However, due to rights issues; the show was announced to be canceled after just 8 episodes. They had later announced that they finally acquired the rights to the show, deciding to release the last 2 episodes of the series on Toonami on December 6, 2014.

Specials

• Hellsing: The Dawn: Taliesin Jaffe, the English dub director for the Hellsing: Ultimate series stated in a panel at Otakon 2008 that Hellsing: The Dawn is going to be animated as part of Ultimate. It was revealed on the official features page for Hellsing VIII in the official Japanese Hellsing website that the special Short Gaiden in the extra disc that comes with the limited edition of Hellsing: Ultimate OVA VIII will be The Dawn. The post also stated that the team will be working on a manuscript from Kohta Hirano himself and that the 4 pages of this manuscript will be included with the volume's liner notes booklet. The third installment of Gaiden featured a commercial for Drifters nearing the end.

• Crossfire: While disccusions about adapting Crossfire into an animated form they eventually set out to produce Crossfire as a Drama CD series instead; releasing alongside Hellsing: Ultimate VI and Hellsing: Ultimate VII. Since Crossfire is mainly an episodic series; each chapter featuring different main villains, the Crossfire Drama CD features Jin Horikawa as Aphram, Rei Igarashi as Ilyushin, and Susumu Chiba as Abraham Van Rogh as the main villains of Crossfire respectively. The voice actors for Heinkel Wulf, Yumiko Takagi, Alexander Anderson, and Enrico Maxwell in the actual series reprised their roles for the Drama CD.

• Luke and Jan Valentine's Merry Manga: A commercial for Hellsing: Ultimate V and Hellsing: Ultimate IV features the Afterword segments of the Hellsing manga, however, with some slight changes. Most of these are completely original segments written by the OVA's staff, despite it being directly inspired by the Afterword segments of Hellsing. Essentially, these segments are just the animators having fun and it's completely comedic. Furthermore, since it's a commercial, some of the lines written, especially near the ending includes promotions.
