About Alucard[]

Alucard.

According to Crispin, Alucard is an extremely powerful, but extremely bored being. He believes Alucard wants to be beaten, specifically by a human, in order to reaffirm his own beliefs regarding humans and monsters: that humans are superior and only a human can truly defeat a monster. Crispin says this is why Alucard was so angry at Alexander Anderson, for when he turned into the monster of god, he denied him this and "screwed up his argument". The latter is a more Theological reason.[1]

He believes Alucard harbors some self-hatred and regrets turning into a monster, wanting to see his belief of humanity being enough confirmed through his own death.

In an interview about the original Hellsing anime, Crispin said that it was an honor to play a character that represents "such a visceral force of nature", because he has always been attracted to those kinds of characters in storytelling.[2] Crispin also mentioned how voicing Alucard was a lot of fun, saying that it was the first big role that he got and that it was one of the first things that he did after moving from New York to Los Angeles. He had also noted that he had initially tried voicing Alucard with a British accent, to which, he said that he didn't sound like the "badass he needed to sound like" - which ultimately, lead to Alucard having the American accent. Later on, in that same interview, Crispin said that in one of his favorite episodes (episode 10), Alucard was locked up in the basement; so he didn't have to go for that "big, deep, rumbly" voice anymore. He also mentioned that Alucard has some of the best lines around. [3]
