What a perfect night... The kind of night that makes me want to have a bite to drink...

–Alucard, Hellsing Episode 1: The Undead

Alucard (アーカード Ākādo?) is a powerful vampire and is the deuteragonist of the Hellsing anime series.

He is the most powerful weapon of the Hellsing Organisation working against other vampires and other such supernatural forces. Alucard is no mere vampire; it has been implied that he is one of the most powerful vampires (besides Incognito), as well as the most powerful entity in the entire series. He was responsible for saving Seras Victoria's life by turning her into a vampire at The Cheddar Village Chapel, rescuing her from the Cheddar Priest. He is also Seras' master due to her refusal to drink blood and free herself much to his annoyance.

In the English dub and sub of both series, he is voiced by Crispin Freeman and Jōji Nakata, which, both later reprises their role for Alucard in the new OVA series.

Appearance

Physical Appearance

Alucardheadref

Alucard has eyes that are orange, and red in the middle of the eye. He can change his hair as it's a part of his shadow, but he was often seen sporting short, jet-black hair, and his bangs fall slightly in his eyes, with strands on the sides framing his face in this form. However, at the start of episode 13, Alucard's hair changed, appearing longer and messier. Like all forms of Alucard, this form's arms are incredibly long, as shown in the first episode where Alucard's arms literally reach to his knees. However, it should be noted that Alucard's arms are inconsistent. This form of Alucard is also wider compared to his level 1 form.

It appears that his clothing is part of his physical form due to the fact that when he regenerates, his clothing also repairs itself. As a vampire, he possesses enhanced shapeshifting abilities, allowing him to change his shape. He appears as a tall, long-limbed, broad-shouldered adult man of indeterminate but reasonably young age.

Alucard flashback

During Integra's flashback in episode 10 "Master of Monster", Integra, Richard, and his men saw Alucard's corpse, with long, white hair -probably due to his body drying up from the lack of blood or even as a stressful reaction to his imprisonment. Alucard's eyebrows were thinner, his eyes were notably soggy, and he was much skinnier than before.

However, in Hellsing Episode 6: Dead Zone, Alucard's hair was shorter - meaning that he can control the length of his hair.

Level 1 card

In episode 13, Alucard gets revived due to the blood of fallen Hellsing soldiers and releases restraint to level 1 - his most powerful form. His appearance here looks similar to when he was imprisoned; soggy eyes, a body skinnier than before, and long hair, though now it isn't white and is instead black. This form of Alucard is lankier compared to his "Count" form, however, and seems much taller. Near the end of episode 13, Alucard's long hair goes upwards and its color turns from black to neon white, which is the same color as Sett.

Like his count form, Alucard's clothing appears to be a part of his physical forms. When Incognito made a giant hole in the side of Alucard's abdomen, there was no skeleton or meat - as his insides are just black. (however, this could all be shadows)

Attires

AlucardConcept

Alucard's level 5 - 2, also known as his "count" form, wore a "Victorian Style" fashion attire; which includes a white suit covered by a grey charcoal suit with a crimson frock overcoat, which has ruffles on its shoulders, similar to duster coats. However, Alucard's ruffles are noticeably only exclusive to its shoulders, and not his back or front. He also wore grey dress pants that matches his charcoal suit, along with leather riding boots and a red cravat. He also often dons a crimson fedora that has a wide floppy brim, and pink sashes that act as the fedora's band, along with a pair of dark green, circular, orange-tinted sunglasses with goggle sidings.

His gloves, which are engraved with the Hellsing seal (a pentacle decorated with occult symbols and several mottoes, reading: "Hell's Gate Arrested / Gott Mit Uns / And Shine Heaven Now") are also thought to be part of this mechanism and the source of Hellsing's control over him (Alucard's distinctive gloves are visible in the vast majority of his transformations, even when Alucard himself is not in a humanoid form).

Alucrdcage

During Integra's flashback, he wears a blue straightjacket with brown straps that kept his arms behind his back. However, unlike normal straightjackets, Alucard's straightjacket has much more stripes in it. While almost all characters in Hellsing have white gloves, this form of Alucard's are dark blue, with no Pentagram on it like Alucard's other forms, with the exception of Baskerville.

When Luke Valentine and Alucard fought, Alucard appears in his level 1 form, however, his attire is noticeably black, instead of the red color which appeared in episode 13.

Alucardlevel111

He wears the red one instead of the blue leather coat/straightjacket seen right before Integra released the vampire from his captivity in the dungeon of Hellsing manor. He has only used it on one enemy, at least on screen; he uses it against Incognito (whose powers match with Alucard) In this form, Alucard seems to prefer fighting with hand-to-hand combat.

Unlike his blue version of this form, which has blue gloves and no Restriction Pentagram, this version of level 1 regains the white gloves with the pentagram, however, it is not seen in the concept arts.

Personality

Alucard is violent, sadistic, and masochistic, often belittling opponents after allowing himself to be shot to bits by them. He's not just cruel towards vampires - he's cruel to humans, too. If Seras hadn't stopped him, he would've killed both Kim and Steadler. He abhors cowards and treats his enemies extremely brutally, enjoying both inflicting pain and taunting them, especially those who can't control themselves; all accompanied by his sarcastic humor. One such example is Leif and Jessica, to which Alucard calls them cowards and belittles them.

Youcant

Alucard questions Leif and Jessica's motivation.

He also becomes deeply disgusted by the vampires he hunts, as not only are they pathetic to him but they cause destruction, chaos, and are cruel towards humans, meaning that he still retains a sense of humanity despite being an undead monster. Alucard has expressed extreme disgust with the vampires he has been hunting for the last 100 years, especially when they kill without purpose. Alucard makes his discontent apparent, demanding to know the motivation behind their rampage. In addition, Alucard seems to love puzzling his opponents, often teleporting whenever they look at him or pretending to be dead before regenerating shortly after - demonstrated in episode 2, where he encounters two pathetic vampires known as Leif and Jessica.

Its about time

Alucard's reaction, after Luke finally appears in the basement.

Alucard has stated multiple times in the anime that he's looking for a worthy opponent.[1][2] Because of his "immortality", he must suffer through long, boring years without any fun - which could even last up for decades; which is why in the anime, Alucard's reaction after noticing that Incognito, a "real undead", may not seem like an over-reaction, rather; he's tremendously excited, realizing that he's the one that can end this boredom. However, despite this, his desire to fight someone worthy of his power truly shows his psychopathic and sadistic nature, in which, if he found someone truly fascinating because of the powerful aura that they emit, Alucard may betray Hellsing, as shown in episode 8, where he puts Integra in some kind of illusion and begs for her to release the "power". During battles, at the start; he may let his opponent get some strikes/shots at him, as that's how he knows what kind of opponent he's facing; either a pathetic freak or the "real deal", Such as when he was fighting Incognito. Rather than letting Incognito shoot him first, as usual, he instead dodges his bullets.

From what we were shown, there are two possible outcomes when Alucard sees you as a real opponent, rather than someone who he'll normally consider a "pathetic fool". However, it should be said that the two outcomes tell a lot about his psychopathic tendencies and such, here are the two outcomes:

  • If an opponent disappoints him when Alucard considers them a "category A", Alucard's personality takes a turn from his usual sarcastic and cocky attitude - to his serious, disappointed and murderous intent side; in which, he will humiliate and break you. A prominent example where this is the case is during the fight with Luke Valentine; Luke, after running away from Alucard after he showed his true form, then got insulted by Alucard, got incredibly humiliated and embarrassed, which led to him going insane and getting mauled by the Baskerville Hound.
  • If an opponent actually manages to satisfy him - which is very rare, to an extent; only happened once in the show - he might actually show you his true identity, something Incognito asked for and Alucard, in return for finally satisfying him after being fed up with lowlifes and artificial FREAKs, he shows him his true identity. [3]

However, even as an invincible vampire, even Alucard can be stunned because of his arrogance, as his ego is incredibly huge. In his first meeting with Alexander Anderson, he assumed he had easily killed Anderson with a single shot to the forehead. It was not until Anderson stood up and took him by surprise, impaling him with multiple blessed bayonets, that Alucard learned Anderson was a human Regenerator.[4] When Alucard was fighting Incognito, Alucard thought that he had killed Incognito after Incognito got caught off-guard when Alucard suddenly phases himself and then aims towards Incognito's left eye, however, this turns out to be not true and Alucard was lured into Incognito's trap. [5][6]

Despite being a ruthless vampire that shows little-to-no mercy, Alucard also has a kind, caring side, and a sense of morality as he acts as a teacher, or even a father figure, for Seras Victoria. On rare occasions, he will respect and compliment a human; for example, Chris Pickman. Alucard truly respects Chris and says that he's a true soldier of Hellsing, the two wiping out Incognito's army of S.A.S ghouls. When Chris took a bullet to the chest and was dying, Alucard was visibly upset and laid his hat on Chris's dead body as a sign of respect.

Alucardquestions

Alucard questions Seras if she wants to become a vampire.

Despite his disgust for homicidal vampires, he is not entirely against immortality. Rather, he believes it is something one must earn, for example, the two girls; Seras Victoria, and Sir Integra. He says the same line to both of them, "I know you don't want to die tonight.", with Integra in their first meeting, and Seras while facing the Cheddar Priest. In Integra's case, she was about to be killed by her Uncle, who was livid that Arthur, the head of Hellsing at that time, made Integra the new head when he died, rather than Richard when Alucard saved her. After brutally slaughtering Richard's men, he turns his attention towards Integra, smiles, and slams her against a wall, ordering her to obey him, and saying that all of his powers will become hers if she does so. Hearing Integra's answer, he was satisfied, since the orders and intimidation were nothing but a "test" that she had passed. Alucard proceeds to bow to her after that, recognizing her as Hellsing's true head. With Seras, she was about to be turned into a slave and despite death being inevitable, she refused to give up, telling the priest that she'll blow his brains out. That's when Alucard barged in, and after wiping out the priest's army of ghouls, he was forced to shoot the girl. Knowing this, Alucard questioned Seras if she wanted to become a vampire or die, then tells her to hurry while saying; "The decision has to be made of your own free will". [7][8]

He also clearly has low opinions of humans, thinking that they are incomprehensible, including both of the two girls he highly respect, Seras and Integra. In episode 3, while talking to Integra in her office, she insults his pride as a true vampire, then follows up with "I know you're nothing like those creatures, it was uncalled for.", which made Alucard reply with, "then why did you feel the need to say it?", shortly before stating that, he will never understand humans and again in episode 5, where he stated, "Humans seem happy under their own incomprehensible restrictions".

Despite his dislike towards humankind, he believes that only humans have the right to kill a "monster" like himself, as stated in episode 7, where Alucard stated that Anderson wasn't a man nor a monster, therefore he does not have the rights to end him - only a human "can hope to kill a monster", therefore, Alucard has some sort of respect towards humans, those who don't give up to fight the inevitable of course. [9]

Nevertheless, he's an incredibly cocky vampire - one that is very different from others. He's very confident in his abilities and is very impertinent towards everyone.

Relationships

Allies

Sir Integra Wingates Hellsing

Despite Alucard's apparent dislike towards humans, Alucard respects humans that don't give up and try to fight for their lives, with a willpower that's unlike any other; Sir Integra Wingates Hellsing is one of them. Alucard and Integra share a complex but strict "master and servant" relationship. Integra has been connected to him since her father's death. Arthur Hellsing named her the new head of the Hellsing Organisation, a decision that drove her jealous uncle to try and kill her. Using the air ducts, Integra snuck into the dungeons of the Hellsing estate's sub-levels (recalling that her father said she would find her "salvation" there, should she find herself in the face of death at the hands of her enemies) and found Alucard's corpse in one of the rooms.

Alucardbows

Alucard unexpectedly bows down before young Integra.

Shortly upon discovering him, Richard Hellsing, Integra's uncle, finds her and shoots her. The bullet grazed her arm and the blood from her injury fell onto the corpse, awakening Alucard. He kills all the men in the room and severs Richard's arm before pledging his allegiance to his new master. After protecting her from Richard's final attempt to kill her, Alucard allows Integra to kill her uncle herself. Alucard offered Integra to be a vampire shortly after his awakening, but only when she bravely defied him did he consider her worthy of his respect and servitude and fit to be the head of the Hellsing family. Alucard claimed that Integra "Hasn't changed, she is still so childish..." Even so, he describes her as his "beloved master", showing his undying loyalty to her.

Alucard's respect for Integra is certainly high, but it goes even higher when she tears open her own throat to get Laura's blood out to not become a ghoul and, during Integra's surgery, Alucard tells Seras to observe Integra's battle with Laura; she cut her own throat, risking her life to not become a ghoul, and states that "Giving in... is what kills people. When you refuse to surrender with all your heart, only then do you transcend your Humanity. Even in the face of death, never give up". Although most of episode ten is a flashback of Integra and Alucard's first meeting, it is a flashback within a dream. Alucard's presence is felt on some level by adult Integra. Towards the dream's end, adult Integra speaks to the present Alucard. The exchange is gentle and intimate. Alucard replies that she is still the same child. Integra smiles in response, and then child Integra says, "Thank you," also reflecting adult Integra's gratitude toward present Alucard. Furthermore, Alucard was present throughout the surgery of Integra; staying by her side. However, it is then when Integra wakes up; Alucard leaves the room silently. Integra met Alucard when she was thirteen, meaning that Alucard was a constant figure in Integra's life for the past ten years; Alucard watched her grow, and even though she was a child, she was Alucard's master at the time.

Alucard want Integra to become a vampire by choice

"The decision is yours."

In episode 11, Integra encounters Alucard in the basement where she was informing Alucard about the Ceremony with the Queen of England, however, Alucard, before Integra has a chance to inform him, asks her if she had ever thought about "mixing his blood with his, about becoming more than you are", meaning Alucard's giving Integra a chance to transcend humanity. However, Alucard asked this just a day or two after the encounter with the baobhan sith; which means that Alucard truly understands and notices Integra's strong willpower as a human. In the last minutes of episode 13, where the Hellsing organisation was disbanded, and Integra was locked up; Alucard is inside of Integra's cell, in which, he picks up wine, looks at her, and then breaks the wine's glass. His hand bleeds, then he says the following - "It's your choice", which means that Alucard is giving her a second chance to become a true vampire like Seras. However, the episode ends with Integra smirking.

Alucard's concern for his masters' safety is present, whether it was Arthur or Integra that's in danger, he's always there in case they need any kind of protection. Arthur even trusted Alucard to keep Integra safe, which shows that even when Arthur had locked up Alucard before due to his distrust over Alucard, Alucard is still willing to serve the Hellsing family; meaning that he understood why Arthur locked him. In Integra's case, his concern for her safety is present throughout the series; in episode 9, Alucard displayed rage and hatred towards Incognito when he realized that Incognito had ordered Camilla to turn Integra into a ghoul, which he made a hasty return to the Hellsing manor's office and kills Laura. Even so, Alucard has his priorities straight, and his main goal is to look for a worthy opponent, therefore, he made the decision to abandon Integra and go after Incognito in the Tower of London after he notices that he has finally made his move.

As a further indication of Alucard and Integra's deep bond, the anime has Seras observing it. At the beginning of episode 11, Alucard and a recovering Integra are sitting quietly on the balcony. Seras, who is trying to deal with her nightmare, only notices Alucard at first and is happy to see him. She starts to say "Master" but she falls silent upon noticing that Integra is with him. Seras does not want to, and likely does not know how to, interrupt them

Seras Victoria

Alucard holds deep feelings of admiration towards his fledgling, Seras. Alucard seems to be more gentle and understanding compared to his OVA counterpart who is harsher. While he is frustrated with her refusal to drink blood at first, he was always confident that eventually, she would drink blood, and was clearly understanding about Seras' refusal to drink blood -but eventually, in episode 4, Seras finally drinks blood after watching Alucard sucking on Kim's blood. As she watched that, she bit onto her own hand, and when they returned to the manor, Seras ran to her room and drank the medical blood that was on her table.

Seras chooses to become a Vampire

Alucard's creation of his new fledgling, Seras Victoria.

In the first few episodes, Alucard, after turning Seras into his fledgling, was quite demanding of her, while Seras always looks to him for advice. While Seras obeys him almost every time, she often doesn't; Alucard tells Seras to drink blood, but she refuses and instead, flushes the medical blood down the toilet, which made Alucard obviously a little annoyed. While Alucard taunts nearly everyone he met, especially FREAKs or even true vampires like him, he respects both Seras and Integra because of their decisions to fight for their life, even when cornered, they don't give up, which led to Alucard asking Seras if she wants to be his fledgling, and Integra becoming Alucard's true Master, instead of Richard, her despicable uncle. In episode 10, Alucard says "When you refuse to surrender with all your heart, only then do you transcend your Humanity". While this was towards Integra, this was exactly what Seras did; she didn't give up, and instead tried to fight back when death was inevitable. This was probably what led to Alucard giving Seras her choice to die or become his fledgling.

In episode 2 of Hellsing, Alucard and Integra talk about Seras, with Integra questioning Alucard's actions in turning Seras into a vampire. Alucard replies back by mentioning her decision to choose to be a vampire by her own will, and later, in episode 3, Alucard tells Integra that humans are incomprehensible, her and Seras, and that he will never understand humans.

Seras holding Alucard head in her arms

After Alucard dies, Seras chooses to stay with him and hugs his decapitated head.

On Seras' part, she appears to be extremely loyal to him, disobeying his order to draw back as to help him against Incognito, and later, when that all proves useless and Alucard is temporally killed, Seras hugs his decapitated head in a pool of blood, and finally got herself to drink Alucard's blood. However, she does that when Alucard was "dead", therefore, it doesn't do anything, something Incognito stated. Alucard takes on a role of a mentor and teacher to help Seras reach her full potential. As Seras lost her parents at a young age, her fondness and love for Alucard could be similar to a daughter's love for her father. At times, Seras seems nervous and uneasy around Alucard, mainly due to his constant berating about her being a pathetic vampire during the early days of Seras' vampire life. However, she demonstrates great loyalty for him that transcends the actions of a slave obeying and serving a master.

Walter C. Dornez

Given how much we see Walter and Alucard actually interact on-screen, they seem to respect each other. It was mentioned that Walter created Alucard's first pistol, the Casull, and later, at Alucard's request - Jackal. It also appears that they both had teamed up to fight something, and Alucard was so excited to see Walter back in-action, also in the process - dubbing him; "Angel of Death". In return, Walter, when he was being carried on a stretcher after a crash that nearly killed him in a helicopter, dubs Alucard, after seeing his true form in action; "The True Immortal". This probably also implies that he had seen Alucard's level one form in action, as he was smirking throughout the process.

Arthur Hellsing

Arthur Hellsing was Alucard's previous master before Integra Hellsing. Nothing is known about their relationship, although it's possible that Alucard respected him. For instance, in episode 10, when a young Integra stands up to Alucard after he tries to intimidate her, he proclaims "You ARE your father's daughter!", and then proceeds to bow to her, apologizing for his disrespect. Also in episode 3, where he stares at a picture of Arthur in Integra's office.

It was also implied that Arthur had given Alucard the name "Alucard" when he was still Dracula. He had also entrusted Alucard with Integra if she was in deep trouble, and when there were no other options, which shows that Arthur has some sort of degree of trust in him, even though Arthur himself had locked up Alucard.

Chris Pickman

Even though Alucard has very low opinions on humans - as he keeps on talking about how incomprehensible they are, Alucard respects those who refuse to give up, and aside from Integra and Seras, one special member of the Hellsing Organisation Special Military Forces Alucard actually respects - is Chris Pickman. Chris kept his cool even when cornered by three SAS ghouls, but he still didn't give up and continued fighting them. Alucard saved Chris and admired him, calling the man a "true soldier of Hellsing". Alucard and Chris also later on wipe the Tower of London out of SAS ghouls, and they were later joined by Seras.

To show Alucard's respect for Chris even further, after Chris begs Alucard to kill him after being shot by a SAS ghoul, in which he could turn into a ghoul at any minute - Alucard fulfills his request and actually laid his fedora on Chris' head. He admires Chris for being not fearful, keeping his cool, and continuing to fight when it's clear that he's no match for them, even though the end result was inevitable.

Enemies

Incognito

Alucardandincognito

Alucard and Incognito stares face-to-face.

Obviously, the two greatly hate each other, an example of this is when Alucard was truly angered by Incognito's doing in episode 9, where Incognito attempts to turn Integra into a ghoul, and in episode 12, where Incognito almost kills Seras. What makes Incognito a very worthy opponent to Alucard is his origins and the fact he is a true vampire, alongside his dark magic which actually incapacitated Alucard. [10]

Incognito is also a cunning tactician, making Alucard, who's very arrogant and thought that he could kill Incognito very easily, have a difficult time fighting him during his "count" state. However, that all changed when Alucard was revived, Incognito's personality had slightly changed; He is more arrogant because he believes that Sett will destroy Alucard easily. Incognito is both sadistic and masochistic. In one scene he says that he lives for nothing but destruction and in another, after being wounded by Alucard, exclaims about his love of pain.

Alucard's main priority in the show was to find a perfect and worthy opponent, and Incognito fits the description of that. Both are incredibly violent, sadistic, and belittle their opponents when they have the chance to do so. Furthermore, both favor their masters, Alucard with Integra and Incognito with his unnamed master. Ironically, during their first fight, Alucard got defeated due to the fact that he underestimated Incognito, and Incognito later lost due to underestimating Alucard during their final battle, being so confident that he could win as he "has the power of the ancient God, Sett". Though, even after this, Alucard has some kind of respect and has huge fun battling him and considers Incognito a very worthy opponent, going as far as dubbing him "A true category A Vampire", and was also worthy enough to know Alucard's identity, as shown in Alucard's final battle with Incognito in episode 13. He's also one of the very few people that know Alucard's true nature, aside from Luke, and is possibly the only known vampire to know Alucard's true Identity. [11]

When Alucard finishes off Incognito, instead of drinking his blood like many other opponents before, he instead pulls the spear, and then impales Incognito with it from top-to-bottom and hangs him on top of the Cathedral; keeping him as some sort of trophy or something.[12]

Alexander Anderson

Alucard and Anderson hate each other. It is shown multiple times in the show, such as in episode 3 where Alucard insults him multiple times after finding out that he was a Regenerator and calls him a failed science project, mentioning Anderson's hypocrisy as he said that he hates monsters while being a monster himself.

Whipping

Anderson and Alucard stares face to face.

Alucard says that "He's neither man nor a monster, only a man can truly hope to defeat a monster", implying that in this version, Alucard did not see Anderson as a worthy foe, and only saw him as a dog to the Vatican.[13] It is unknown why Alucard spared him by shooting the bayonet that Anderson grabbed with his mouth while trying to kill Alucard with it. Perhaps it could be that he had enough of it, like what he said or that behind all these insults, Alucard slightly sees Anderson as a worthy opponent and wants him to grow stronger to the point of being capable of defeating him, possibly after seeing Alexander not giving up and trying to kill him even after losing both of his arms. Maybe these are indications that Alucard is slowly starting to think of Anderson as a worthy opponent.

On the other hand, Anderson truly hates Alucard and has no respect for him. He fights dirty and resorts to trickery after being shot twice and Alucard not giving him the chance to fight back and considers Alucard as "Hellsing's Pet Abomination". condemning him multiple times. Anderson refuses to give up towards Alucard, because he had given up before, and was very ashamed and thinks that this is the chance to forgive himself for almost killing himself to not become a ghoul when he was facing a vampire, most likely a true one that resembled Alucard.

Had the show continued, their relationship was meant to be explored more; this was shown when Alucard spared Alexander during their fight in the subway.

Luke Valentine

Lukeandalucard

Alucard and Luke, pointing eachothers weapons at their opponent.

When Luke and Alucard first met, Alucard finds Luke to be, quite fascinating. Alucard had also complimented Luke before they even met, stating that the vampire that he'll be fighting isn't the same as the trash Seras and Walter fighting upstairs. Alucard, after hearing that Luke has been preparing for this and sarcastically says that he'll be fighting one on one, with the "Great Alucard", smiles and then witnesses his insane speed, in which he complimented Luke and says that he's quite fast.

He also complimented Luke for his speed multiple times in their battle, and after he runs out of the Casull's ammo, he stands up and smiles very widely, and now, recognizing Luke as a threat and a "category A vampire", he gets serious and says that he'll show him how a real vampire does battle. However, Alucard's praises for Luke were immediately taken back by Alucard, after he hears Luke call him a monster, which disappoints him. Alucard, now upset that the "category A vampire" just turns out to be more artificial garbage, tells Luke that he's just like the others - a move that angers and humiliates Luke.

In the end, Alucard calls Luke; "nothing but dog food" and mauls him alive, by summoning the Baskerville hound. Then leaves the scene, very disappointed.

Cheddar Priest

Seeing as how the Cheddar Priest intends to take Seras for himself and turn her into a ghoul, Alucard barges in and introduces himself as the Hellsing's garbage disposal unit, in which the priest took lightly and sees only as a mere insult. Alucard, later on, continues to belittle him with a bunch of insults, calling him a clown, a narrow-minded king, and such. After regenerating from a barrage of bullets from the Division-11 ghouls created by the priest, Alucard stated that he can't stand vampires like the priest, calling them "half-assed vampires without the slightest bit of respect". However, even then, the priest took Seras hostage and calls Alucard a "Play-thing of the humans" before shortly, trying to reason and potentially team up with Alucard. However, instead of listening to what the priest has to say, Alucard ignores him and focuses on Seras, which made the priest mad. However, he couldn't do anything and was scared of what would happen.

In the end, Alucard had to shoot Seras so the bullet would go through the heart of the "maggot vampire". However, Alucard turns Seras into his fledgling, as it was her choice when Alucard offered.

Vampire

In episode 4, it was revealed that a vampire was working with Kim and Steadler to film a video to expose the vampires and the Hellsing Organisation after Kim witnessed one. When he first met the vampire, he quickly insults him, questioning him about how fun it is showing his ugly face to the whole world, and if he is proud of it. Alucard also calls the vampire, the lowest form of a vampire - and a monster who's reduced to a spectacle for human enjoyment. He later quickly kills him.

However, Alucard states that there's one thing they had in common; they're a creature in the service of humans.

Fogorabat

Alucard belittles both of them, and puzzles them by teleporting whenever they look at him.

Leif and Jessica

Despite meeting them only for minutes near the end of episode 2, Alucard obviously despised them for their actions - in which, they killed multiple families to become true undead like him and not because they were thirsty, to which, Alucard berates them and states how pathetic they are and how they would never become true vampires. Questioning how these actions satisfy them, Alucard calls them cheap and dubs them "Bonnie and Clyde", telling them to be ashamed themselves (In the English dub, Alucard calls them "two bits terrors"). In addition, Alucard smiles throughout the process of killing Leif.

However, he lets Jessica go; in order to train Seras, in which she had successfully eliminated her and finally became a "true" and "proud" Hellsing member.

Others

Helena

Though it wasn't shown, they do have some sort of a relationship as shown when Helena realizes that Alucard made Seras a vampire and says that Seras is blessed because of that.

Powers and Abilities

Overview

Alucard fights with ferocity and often-extreme cruelty, rarely shooting to kill until his target has been totally disabled and humiliated. As he is essentially immortal and invincible, Alucard is very egotistical as well. He freely taunts and belittles his opponents, often allowing them to inflict seemingly fatal wounds before healing himself and obliterating his enemy. One of his favorite methods is allowing himself to be blown to shreds before simply flowing back together. It can accurately be stated that rather than killing his opponents, Alucard breaks them.

Alucard is the original vampire, Count Dracula, and Hellsing's trump card. He is a sadistic monster who consumed thousands of his enemies and subjects, using their life to supplant his own. While most vampires have some degree of regenerative ability, Alucard's is on another level. He demonstrates a number of unique abilities as well as the ability to regenerate from virtually any injury. Alucard is an extremely formidable and deadly opponent who can cut down most supernatural enemies without releasing the seals that contain his true power. He sometimes lets his opponent damage him, then regenerate as a way to taunt them. He is a formidable combatant, as he is Vlad The Impaler himself.

Physically

  • Superhuman Strength: Unlike the artificial vampires or "FREAKs", Alucard's strength is more powerful - to start; his pistols, the Jackal and the Casull are far too unwieldy for a human to hold, Alucard however, has no problem using them - even getting a little to almost none recoils while shooting the massive weapons. Furthermore, in episode 10's flashback scene, he was going up to a couple of Hellsing soldiers, however, he slices one easily with his left hand, and then dashes and slices through them in a blink of an eye. They were fully armed, with vests, helmets, and weapons. Although FREAK vampires aren't as strong as true vampires like Alucard and Incognito, they're incredibly durable than that of an average human, however, Alucard impales them with seemingly no problem, for example; Enrico Stivaletti.[14] A ghoul in episode 1 was also impaled by Alucard, just shortly before he met his future fledgling.[15]
  • Superhuman Speed and Reflexes: Being a true vampire, Alucard is incredibly fast. One such scene of his speed was in episode 10 - where he dashes and kills soldiers in an instant. He has also dodged Alexander Anderson's holy bayonets 4 times with no problem, though he did eventually get stabbed at the end of the battle. Even then, he was fast enough to aim the Casull at Anderson's head when he was close enough to him. [16] However, he rarely shows this power as he prefers to take bullets, rockets, etcetera head-on in a fight, rather than just dodging them as he's shown to be really confident in his abilities.
  • Enhanced Endurance: Alucard takes most damage without flinching or making a sound, quietly allowing the enemy to attack before retaliating tenfold. In episode 10's flashback sequence, where multiple Hellsing soldiers were surrounding him, they opened fire and barrages Alucard with bullets, however, he doesn't even flinch and attack while being shot at.
  • Enhanced Durability: Alucard appears to have the ability to harden the surface of his body to the point where artificial FREAKs, such as Enrico Stivalleti, were easily impaled by his hand, along with an unnamed ghoul from episode 1. He has also been shot by multiple guns at point-blank range, with Luke's shortened M1 Garand being the best example of this; he was shot in the head twice with it, but instead of being hurt - he laughs it off.[17]

Abilities

  • Regeneration: As a true vampire, Alucard has the ability to regenerate quickly, so normally, his regeneration powers are faster than Luke Valentine, Paul Wilson, or any kind of FREAK vampire. Though his regeneration powers are faster than average FREAKS, it seems that true vampires, such as Incognito's regeneration ability, are on-par, or faster, than Alucard; he quickly heals after getting a shot with the Jackal at point-blank range, which would normally kill any vampires.[18] Blessed weapons, such as Anderson's bayonets, can hurt Alucard.[19] However, they do regenerate the same, if not as quickly. Incognito's dark magic powers also hurt Alucard, but, unlike the blessed weapons which can hurt Alucard (though allow him to regenerate the same), Incognito's spine bullets damage Alucard more than Anderson's blessed bayonets, taking even longer for him to generate.[20]
  • Extrasensory Perception: Alucard has senses that are not only sharper than a mortal's, affording him abilities such as perfect accuracy, but he has abilities that they completely lack. In particular, he possesses a 'third-eye' which allows him to see things from far, far distances. He uses this against Anderson during their battle in the subway.[21]
  • Dark Composition: Though he generally dons a corporeal, humanoid form, Alucard is made up of a highly variable otherworldly substance that is black in core and reddish on its edges. This can be especially seen whenever he takes heavy damage, the darkness being immune to conventional weaponry. Along with composing his being, it can serve as a weapon. Alucard is able to transform this material into virtually anything he chooses, like a puddle of goo.
  • Intangibility: It seems that Alucard has the ability to walk through solid objects, such as walls. This was demonstrated in multiple episodes such as episode 4 when he appears behind Integra and Walter on the ceiling and again on the ceiling about the unnamed vampire.
  • Immortality: Alucard is biologically immortal, immune to disease and aging. Alucard has suffered all manner of injury to the most extreme degrees, only to reform himself. This seems to indicate structural immortality as well, but the vampire himself asserts that there is no such thing as a true immortal.
  • Aestivation: Alucard will enter a dormant state if he goes too long without blood. It is unknown if he can be starved to death, as he goes decades without a drop of blood before a young Integra finds him. It is never made clear if this is unique to him or if all vampires can do this.
  • Hematophagy: As a vampire, Alucard has the ability to consume blood raw. He has long, conical fangs to assist in this job as well as a serpentine-like tongue. His feeding habits have been seen to vary: from the traditional neck-biting to simply ripping people to pieces and outright devouring them. Alucard doesn't seem to need blood to survive. However, if starved of it, he will enter an inactive death-like state.
    • Hemokinesis: Alucard has the ability to manipulate blood. This ability seems to be limited to blood outside of the body, as he is never seen influencing the blood of enemies while they are intact.
      • Soul Absorption: By draining a person of their blood, Alucard gains dominance over their souls and very forms. He also takes on whatever knowledge they possess.
        • Familiar Control: Alucard can summon forth anyone he's taking the soul of at will. He has an entire legion dwelling within him but seems to favor using Baskerville, the Black Dog.[22] Whoever he absorbs, their powers are at his disposal. Alucard seems content to completely dominate everything living inside him. It is unclear if this is due to their individual wills or a lack of experience on Seras' part.
  • Shapeshifting: Alucard has to have the ability to shapeshift to bats or other creatures. Demonstrated in episode 2, 5, and 13. From what we've seen in those episodes, he can transform into a bat and Baskerville themselves. This probably implies that he can transform into any familiars he has. However, it seems that it's not only him that can do this, as this is probably one of the vampire abilities, specifically - true vampires have this ability; as he berated about how pathetic Leif and Jessica were when they even shapeshift into a bat.[23]
  • Telepathy: Alucard is able to communicate telepathically with his fledgling, Seras. The telepathy doesn't seem to have a maximum range.
  • Teleportation: Demonstrated in episode 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12 and finally, 13, Alucard has the ability to teleport anytime. However, the specific range for his teleportation ability is unknown, as he was able to teleport from the Bobhan castle to the Hellsing manor, which seems to be far away.[24]
  • Daywalking: Despite being a vampire, Alucard seems to have no problem with the sunlight whatsoever. His fledgling, Seras, can also do this, meaning that probably, only true vampires have this ability.[25]
  • Illusion Creation: Alucard was shown to put Lisa and Jessica in some kind of illusion -where in their point of view, they were in a dark, endless tunnel filled with ghouls, but in reality, they're not. In episode 8, Alucard put Integra in some kind of illusion. In her point of view, she found herself bound and gagged to a pole before armed trainees enter the room -armed with guns, all of them pointing towards Integra. Then suddenly, she sees the walls of the room fall and she sees herself falling down from the sky to the grass.
  • Supernatural Detection: He could see the blessings on Father Anderson's bayonets as well as the holy barrier preventing the use of "black magic", he also sensed Incognito's presence in episode 8.
  • Telekinesis: Alucard is able to lift a FREAK Chip[26] and was able to load the Jackal and pull its slide mentally.[27] The exact weight of these things is unknown, but Alucard is never seen using telekinesis to move anything heavier than a human being.
  • Body Phasing: Like Incognito, Alucard can phase his body to avoid killing blows; in episode 12, Incognito, after scarring Alucard's cheeks with his Grenade Launcher, was caught off-guard when Alucard seemingly disappears, before re-appearing again, pointing the Jackal on his left eye with the Jackal.[28]
  • Hibernation: Alucard is able to survive long periods of time without consuming blood, and can fight at a usual level of strength after drinking even the smallest amount of blood.
  • Weather Control: The ability to control the weather to an unknown limit, as demonstrated by the red fog he created when he returned to Hellsing manor.[29]
  • Hypnosis Immunity: Laura, a baobhan sith, known for her hypnotic abilities, was unable to control true vampires such as Seras and Alucard.

Main article: Baskerville

Overview

One form which is the least used appears to be his usage the Black hound of Baskerville's form. It appears as a large black dog with multiple eyes on each side of his face. Alucard is seen as the dog in the Hellsing opening as well as in the trailer for the Hellsing anime, as well as a glimpse of him sneaking around the Hellsing manor.

Strengths and Abilities

  • Enhanced Senses: As a Hellhound, Alucard in his Baskerville form is the best when it comes to hearing, smelling, and sensing. Although it was not shown as Alucard only ever used his form in episode 13.
  • Enhanced Speed: In episode 13, Alucard was seen traveling from bell tower to bell tower in London really fast and it seems that this form is the fastest when it comes to speed, even faster than his level 1 form, which defeated Incognito.
  • Enhanced Stamina: The ability to sustain themselves without being tired. As the Hellhound of Baskerville, Alucard most definitely has this ability. As stated, he was seen traveling towers from towers really fast, without being tired.
  • Enhanced Strength: The Baskerville is quite strong, as shown in episode 6 where he mauls Luke Valentine without having a hard time doing so. It was also seen biting Sett, who is an ancient god awakened by Incognito, with no problems whatsoever.
  • Enhanced Leap: Baskerville can jump over great distances.

Overview

Alucard's level 1 state is the most powerful form as he needed Integra's permission to unlock it. Also, this form can defeat Incognito, who defeated him in his "Count" Form on their first fight. This form is powerful enough to defeat and damage the Egyptian deity, Sett, and Incognito, who is powered with dark magic. It is assumed that Alucard, when he was hibernating, was in his level 1 State due to having the same appearances, only the colors changing.

Enhanced Physical Abilities

  • Enhanced Superhuman Strength:
    AlucardHoldingSett

    Alucard Holding Sett's mouth.

Alucard's level 1 state is extremely powerful, as after hibernating for 20 years, he was able to slice 3 of Richard's men with ease and splits one of them in half with no difficulty and also slices off one of their head. Alucard defeated Sett, an Egyptian god, and was also able to hold its mouth. A clash between Sett and a Baskerville summoned by level 1 Alucard created a shockwave that damaged some buildings and cut a bridge. (1.294 - 3.54 tons of TNT), and another clash caused a minor cloud split. When Alucard and Incognito impacted a cathedral after they fell from the sky, their collision lit up the entire building on fire from the inside. Sett previously caused this explosion and more throughout London.
  • Enhanced Superhuman Speed and Reflexes: Alucard, in this form is extremely fast. As stated above, he was able to slice Richard's men in a blink of an eye and later, stopped a bullet from hitting Integra. He also dodged and later caught the Egyptian god Sett.
  • Enhanced Superhuman Durability: Alucard, in this state, is extremely durable to the point where he can survive Sett's blast multiple times at point-blank range, and then mocks Incognito and later, he was able to Survive Incognito's Grenade launcher's red, helical spines which are powered with dark magic at point blank; those same bullets also hurt Alucard visibly in episode 9. Alucard and Incognito crashed into a cathedral and several floors after falling from the sky above the clouds, however, the fall caused little-to-no damage to both, Alucard and Incognito.

Enhanced Abilities and New Abilities

  • Enhanced Regeneration: While Alucard's regeneration's normally impressive, in his level one state, Alucard's regeneration abilities seemingly improve, regenerating his wounds faster than before. His enhanced regeneration powers allow him to regenerate from Incognito's grenade launcher's spine bullets faster than before, and he can even regenerate from Sett's beams. He can also regenerate using the blood of deceased people, as seen when he regenerates himself by controlling the blood of the fallen Hellsing soldiers directly towards his decapitated head, he managed to return to the battle of London after being "killed" by Incognito.[30]
  • Enhanced Familiar Control: Alucard was seen completely controlling Baskerville's actions during his fight with Incognito, even spawning multiple Baskerville's to aid him and they were seen being completely powerful than before, managing to actually hurt the ancient god, Sett.
  • Teleportation: Alucard was seen teleporting from Seras' location to Incognito's location after he revives himself using the blood of the deceased Hellsing soldiers.[31]
  • Gravity Defiance: Alucard was seen battling Incognito up in the sky, and managing to fight there for more than a minute. They both later fell due to colliding with each other.[32]

Special Abilities

  • Sett: After an intense battle between Incognito with Sett and Alucard with Baskerville up in the sky, they both fell and Sett seemingly disappears -until Sett appears to have been merged with Alucard, making his hair glow hot -hot enough to melt a silver cross, which he used to pour on his broken Jackal - creating a what seems like a spear, then he pulls the trigger and finishes off Incognito.[33]

Skills

  • Combat Experience: In addition to his superhuman abilities, Alucard also possesses centuries of combat experience as 400+ years ago, he's Vlad the Impaler himself. Despite this, he often uses his vampiric abilities now that he's an incredibly powerful vampire, but sometimes, he does use strategy and abuses his ability; when Alucard fought Incognito in the Tower of London, he uses his phasing ability after Incognito scarred his cheeks, in which, left Incognito off-guard and Alucard was able to point his Jackal directly at Incognito's distorted-left eye.[34]
  • Skilled Sharpshooter: Though even without his third eye ability, Alucard is incredibly accurate and highly proficient at firing firearms. Notably, he shot a vampire behind a pillar, in the heart without even looking - as shown in episode 12 and accurately shot Seras' heart so that it hits the vampire priest's heart, killing him almost instantly. With his "third eye" ability, he is probably the most skilled out of the two true vampires.

Control Art Restriction System

AlucardControlArt

Alucard, releasing level five.

Alucard's vast powers are controlled entirely by the heir to the Hellsing family (currently Integra Hellsing). This is apparently enforced by something called the "control art restriction system." There are shown to be five levels of restriction and five corresponding states, with lower numbers meaning greater levels of power. Under certain circumstances, Alucard can release some of his greater powers himself; a component of his restriction system called the "Cromwell Approval" seems to influence this ("Cromwell" probably relating to Oliver Cromwell, an English military and political leader best known for his involvement in making England into a republican Commonwealth and for his later role as Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland).

Alucard can often be heard stating what level he is releasing immediately prior to combat ("Releasing control art restriction to level two"). This is, perhaps, a requirement of the release mechanism, but this has never been confirmed. Another possible reason is that it is to unnerve his opponents as he goes into battle.

Cards with his close up+out

Alucard releases level two; his sunglasses disappears while doing so.

It is noticeable that Alucard's attire sometimes changes according to how much power he is using: as he charges up to engage in battle, first his sunglasses, then his fedora will disappear. It has been posited that these articles of clothing are direct physical manifestations of whatever system Hellsing uses to control Alucard, with his leather straight jacket representing his true nature. All restrictions (level 1, 2, 3, etc.) allow Alucard to freely control his "familiars".

The multiple eyes appearing on Alucard's body, mostly his torso, are also somewhat connected to activating his powers, much like how Incognito has to open his distorted eye to activate his ability. In this case, in episode 13, Alucard opens his arm, and an eye appears on his torso. Even further, in episode 6, Alucard releases level 1, and multiple eyes appear, and he turns into some kind of hybrid between Baskerville and some other unknown creatures.

To sum it up, the release states are not just the markers of Alucard's growing powers, they also have an effect on his appearance and fighting methods as well. Up to level 2, Alucard takes his "Count-form". In his level one form, he wears the Red one instead of the Black leather coat/straightjacket seen right before Integra released the vampire from his captivity in the dungeon of Hellsing manor.

It is clear that Integra herself is in control of Alucard's release states as she was seen giving him permission to release to level one, the state where he is in a red version of the black straightjacket-like garb he is shown in when Integra finds him in her youth.

On the back of each of Alucard's gloves is what appears to be an arcane symbol. It consists of a five-pointed pentagram inscribed inside a circle, with strange astrological or alchemical characters in the spaces between each of the points.

There is a band of writing around the circle with the following inscription: "HellsingHells Gate ArrestedGott Mit UnsAnd Shine Heaven Now". Gott Mit Uns is intended to be "God with Us" or "God be with us" in German. Outside that band are more unusual characters, written in strange runic script. Using letter substitution, it becomes clear that the runic words are English, writing out "Hellsing", "Hells Gate Arrested", and "Shine Heaven Now". At the bottom of the circle, towards the wrist, is a square with rounded corners and four horizontal lines, making a ladder of sorts within the square.

    Forms

    Overview

The Gonzo Anime doesn't show that many of Alucard's forms, only showing two of Alucard's forms. Though it could be seen as 3, if you were to count the black and red straight jacket as an entirely different form.

    Forms

    • Alucardcaged
The first form Alucard had in the anime was in a blue straightjacket that kept his arms right behind his back, he broke free of the restraints in order to protect Integra Hellsing from death. This form is rather strong, and more than likely his level one form. A clear display of such strength would be that even after 20 long years, Alucard can rip off one of the heads of Richard's men with ease and slice them in half. When Alucard fought Luke, Alucard comes out of Baskerville with the same outfit, but with Black hair.
    • AlucardlevelOne
In the final episode of the anime, Integra orders Alucard to release Control art restriction level one, he appears in the red version of the Black straightjacket when he protected Integra. This form possesses insane strength and durability. This form can beat Incognito, who killed Alucard in his "count" form. This form can only be used when Integra commands him to use level one, the reason is probably that this form is extremely dangerous. For example; in episode 8, Alucard begged Integra to release the "power", but Integra hesitated. It was not until she had no other choice that she releases the power.
    • Alucard outfit
Alucard's most common form is his "Count" form, which is the same form described at the top of the page. Alucard uses his "Count" form throughout the whole story of Hellsing, but, in this version, he wore his hat and glasses for the whole series, unlike in the OVA where he wore the hat up until OVA 3, and the glasses up to OVA 4. Alucard is seen in his common "Count" form while being gunned down by Cheddar Priest's ghouls, and regenerating shortly after. Interestingly enough, when he regenerates, so does his clothing. However, he was beaten by Incognito in this form.
    • Alucardbaskervillee
One form which is the least used appears to be his Black hound of Baskerville form. It appears as a large, black dog with multiple eyes on each side of his face. Alucard is seen as the dog in the Hellsing opening and in the trailer for the Hellsing anime, as well as a glimpse of him sneaking around the Hellsing manor.

    Weapons

Hellsing ARMS .454 CASULL CUSTOM AUTO

    For more information, see Casull.
    GUN

Alucard's signature weapon is the Hellsing Arms .454 Casull (unofficially known as the "Joshua"). This weapon is the first custom handgun made by Hellsing and was specifically designed by Walter. It's essentially a very big semiautomatic pistol, with a length of 39cm. It's chambered for the mighty .454 Casull round, which finds use primarily in hunting large game, such as deer and bears. Of course, these bullets are special, being made out of silver obtained from melted holy relics, with an exploding property as well, making for a rather devastating cartridge against the legions of the night.

    Hellsing 01 booklet 03

The Casull is believed to be based upon the Colt 1911 (or its variants like the longslide), however, it also bears a resemblance to early model Colt pistols. In some close-ups, one may note that the hammer is never fully cocked, indicative of either a double-action or fast-action mechanism similar to the Daewoo DP51. The lengthy barrel and slide give this gun incredible accuracy, and the weight at the front of the gun makes the massive round significantly more controllable. Something this extreme suits Alucard perfectly.

The gun fires custom-made explosive .454 Casull rounds, with the steel bullets bearing a core made from the melted silver Christian cross from Manchester Cathedral. They are used in a six-round single-stack magazine. The Casull is able to kill normal vampires with only 1 shot. It is too heavy and unwieldy for a human to use, yet a perfect match for Alucard's strength.

    Hellsing Combat Pistol 'JACKAL'

    For more information, see Jackal.
    FJlUbzRUcAg6dbF

Alucard's second handgun is the Jackal, which was also made especially for him. The Jackal was made by Walter after Alucard's first encounter with Anderson - in fact, it likely was specifically designed with him in mind, considering the phrase "'Jesus Christ is in Heaven Now'", a variation on a similar statement on Anderson's equipment, is engraved on the side. The Jackal has an overall length of 39cm (the same length as the Casull), is made from pure silver, and weighs 16kg.

    Hellsing 05 booklet 06

The slide covers the entire top frame, and there are thus no creases or lines on the top part of the gun, making room for the engraving. Obviously, no human could possibly use this gun without being blown away by it. The breach also faces the left, instead of the right, so it's more of a sister gun to the .454, though its magazines can hold about the same amount of bullets that the Casull is capable of. The bullets are different as well, being a bigger 13mm, with a gold casing, a reinforced core for armor penetration, a mercury explosive, and each bullet being baptized. Compared to the Casull, the Jackal is distinctly lacking in terms of aesthetic features and is devoid of any contours on the side or frame, save for the grip. This suggests that Walter designed the weapon immediately after Alucard's encounter with Anderson and did not have time to improve its appearance.

This gun is of fantastic proportions. No 13mm round was ever produced. A .50 alone would equal 12.7mm, meaning each bullet must be manufactured by Hellsing alone. It's curious as to how this weapon can weigh 16kg when a full size 7.62X51mm machine gun only weighs 11kg, the weight is probably necessary to control the 13mm rounds, though with a gun this heavy you could probably fire a .50cal BMG round and still have the same desired effect.

    Weaknesses

Ironically, Alucard's personality is one of his strongest weaknesses. Being very powerful, and the only known living true vampire that was living, Incognito aside, and has not fought against someone who's actually as powerful as him, he freely taunts and insults everybody he's fighting, even after just meeting them. Even after knowing that they're a true vampire, like Incognito - they still think that they're just nothing but a good way to waste time. He's practically blinded by arrogance. Many opponents of his abuse his arrogance and confidence in his ability, one such example is when he fought Anderson, where he got decapitated by him with his bayonets. [35]

He's also shown to be a little hasty, which led to his defeat at the hands of Incognito during his first battle, and his head getting sliced off by Anderson during their second encounter.

Aside from Alucard's own personality being one of his strongest, if not strongest weakness, weapons blessed with silver can harm Alucard. He stated; "That sort of weapon can be a real problem, even for us. (Alucard and Seras)".[36] However, it only hurts Alucard, but he has no problem regenerating it, though the Jackal's silver bullet that Incognito telekinetically hurls at Alucard, managed to finish off Alucard temporarily. [37]

One of the many worthy opponents of Alucard, or the most worthy opponent to Alucard, Incognito, has a bunch of arsenals, abilities, and sorceries that can hurt Alucard, for example:

    • Incognito's neon pink or purple beams appears to harm Alucard, even greater than the silver bayonets Anderson uses, as he's shown to be constantly bleeding from it and takes longer to heal, much like the weapon Tubalcain Alhambra uses in the original Hellsing manga, the Tubalcain's Playing Cards. [38][39]
    • Incognito's weapon, the modified Armscor 40mm MGL's dark magic spine bullets hurts Alucard's too.[40]

    While Incognito's arsenal may do more damage to Alucard, Alexander Anderson also has many tools that can harm Alucard, for example;

    • Anderson's bayonets, which were blessed with silver, can harm Alucard. Alucard himself stated that "Weird little toys of his actually hurt". In addition, Alucard was seen struggling to pull out the multiple bayonets that were impaled onto him by Anderson, after getting caught off-guard.[41]
    • Anderson's holy barriers purified the house to prevent the use of "black magic", that being Alucard's ability. Alucard was also noticeably disturbed by it in episode 3, where Anderson showcased the ability. [42]

    Identity

    19-Hellsing-1

A brief moment of The Impaler's face.

While the anime doesn't show many hints as to who Alucard really is, there are riddles placed throughout episodes of the anime, such as; in episode 9, Alucard refers to his name as being "a bit of an enigma" when speaking to Incognito before they fight. In addition, in episode 6, while the Hellsing Manor was being raided by the Valentine brothers, Integra noted that "The ordeals of the first Master(s) of the Hellsing family in the last century were much harsher than this". Alucard also stated that the name "Alucard" was the name his last master, that being Arthur Hellsing, used - implying that Alucard was not his original name.

In the last few minutes of the last episode, Alucard's identity becomes much more clear with Alucard impaling Incognito being the prime example of this; impaling his enemies was common practice for Vlad III The Impaler (Vlad Ţepeş, also known as Dracula). Additionally, upon Incognito's defeat, a close-up is seen of Alucard with half his face shrouded in shadow. When lightning flashes, the other half of his face is revealed to be that of the Impaler. Incognito was also later impaled yet again, but this time -from his crotch to his mouth with the silver spear Alucard created by melting a cross behind him using Sett's power. Alucard referring to his name as an enigma is a reference to the fact that his name is literally "Dracula" but backward.

    Vlad the Impaler

A painting portraying Vlad the Impaler based on the descriptions of him.

Historically, Vlad Ţepeş was responsible for the deaths of between 40,000 and 100,000 of his enemies and various villains in his own country during his reign as the monarch of Wallachia (a major portion of what is now present-day Romania). His most well-known way of execution was impalement. For torturing people by impalement, it is alleged that his executioners learned how to have the victims placed so that the pikes, spears, or other shafts on which they had them impaled would pass most or all of the victim's vital organs, entering their lower nether regions and exiting near the back of their neck. In this way, the victims could be kept alive for days on end before they finally bled to death. When simply executing a person, they were typically impaled straight through the center of their torso, with the shaft entering their groin and exiting through the mouth. This is paralleled by one of the end scenes from the final episode, where Alucard leaves Incognito's corpse, impaled from groin to mouth, hanging from the top of the tower.

Vlad was also known for his deeds as the "Voivode of Wallachia", particularly the fact that any criminal, thief, etc. would be punished severely. When the Ottoman army attempted to invade Wallachia in the mid-15th century, they encountered several thousand impaled and rotting corpses staked on the banks of the Danube River. Historical records state that the Ottoman emperor saw his forces return shortly after, many of them sobbing and ranting that whoever had slaughtered all those people had to be the Devil.

Perhaps the best-known incident regarding Vlad's means of execution was the way by which he prevented the Ottoman Army from invading Wallachia again (following the fall of Constantinople) in 1462. Reports show that he had 20,000 captured Turkish soldiers and convicted criminals impaled and staked out on the borders of his capital city, Târgoviște. Mehmed II, the leader of the Ottomans (who was well-known himself for his use of psychological warfare), was sickened by the sight of the corpses outside the Wallachian capital and ordered his forces back to Constantinople.

    Manga-To-Anime Differences

    • Alucard is slightly more human, his personality is toned down for the show.
    • In the OVA and Manga, Alucard respects Anderson, actually wanting him to kill him had he stayed human. However, in the anime, Alucard hates Anderson. Thinking that he isn't a man nor a monster and that he's nothing but a dog to the Vatican.[43] But, for an unknown reason, Alucard spared Anderson during their duel in the subway.
    • As The Major and The Captain are removed, and with Anderson being turned into a Side Character, the anime created an anime-only villain called "Incognito", who was later on revealed to be a true vampire and he is set to be Alucard's main rival in the anime.
    • In the OVA, Alucard wanted a human to finally end him. But in the anime, he instead looks for someone to be so powerful to satisfy him, after being fed by so many FREAKs by Integra. However, Alucard did say "Only a human could hope to kill a monster" in episode 7.
    • Alucard wears his hat and glasses for the whole series, unlike in the OVA where he wears his hat up to OVA 3.
    • Vlad's appearance seems to be different. In episode 13, Vlad's face was briefly shown, its appearance matches more to the Real life Vlad the Impaler, unlike the OVA.
    • It seems that Alucard's relationship with Integra is much closer in the anime, as it even goes so far that Alucard constantly asks her if she wants to drink his blood.
